Consumer Credit Counseling Services

At LifeSpan all credit counselors are trained and certified and have the knowledge, experience and resources needed to handle questions, suggest solutions and create a strategy to solve the many financial challenges common in today’s society. Adding to callers’ confidence is the knowledge that LifeSpan is a member agency of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, meets all 20 charitable accountability standards of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving accreditation, and is approved by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Programs:

From obtaining and understanding credit reports to the more complex issues of bankruptcy, LifeSpan counselors are prepared and trained to help. LifeSpan offers a full range of programs for participants who may need just one or several services.

Budget Guidance: for those who need assistance creating a spending plan to keep their expenses in line with their income. Counselors assess their situation, identify potential problems and suggest action steps.

Credit Counseling: for those with excessive debt and facing possible bankruptcy. Counselors work with their creditors to design an acceptable repayment plan which may include waiving late fees or eliminating or reducing interest. Participants deposit funds into a trust account at LifeSpan which is then disbursed monthly to their creditors until their situation is resolved.

Credit Report Review: for those who need assistance obtaining and understanding credit reports which are a vital part of everyone’s financial health and future. Counselors obtain a report, review it, provide a detailed explanation, and offer action steps to correct errors and improve credit scores.

Money Management Education: for groups, schools and businesses throughout Butler and Warren Counties. Financial literacy courses are based on six hours of instruction but can be tailored to an organization’s specific needs. Homeownership Education and Counseling: for families seeking to purchase their first home or those facing foreclosure. LifeSpan’s counselors are HUD approved to offer pre-occupancy, post-purchase, mortgage default, and rent delinquency housing counseling. Homebuyer education seminars are also available.

Bankruptcy Pre-filing Counseling: for individuals weighing the decision whether to file for bankruptcy. LifeSpan has approval from the U.S. Department of Justice to provide budget and credit counseling services in its Northern and Southern Ohio regions. Counselors review the basics and consequences of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies and determine whether other alternatives are available. Counseling is available in person or by telephone. Bankruptcy Pre-discharge Counseling: for those who have filed for bankruptcy in the Northern and Southern Ohio regions. LifeSpan offers this financial management course with approval from the U.S. Department of Justice. Forms to bring when attending a Counseling Session

When you come in for your appointment you must bring the completed worksheet printed from above, bills, statements, credit cards, paycheck stubs for a period of one month, letters from creditors, lawyers or collection agencies, and a one-time educational fee of $35 in cash for Credit Counseling.

For Bankruptcy Pre-Filing appointments you must bring the above mentioned paperwork and if you already have an attorney, that attorney’s name, address and phone number, and $50 in cash (if counseling in person) or $50 money order (if counseling by phone).
